RCIA Frequently Asked Questions
What is RCIA?
The Catholic Church always welcomes new members into its community. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which people enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. Interested men and women can explore the Catholic Faith in order to decide whether or not to become Catholic. One is not required to have any previous exposure to Christianity in order to participate.
Who can join the RCIA?
Any person at least 18 years of age (under 18 requires parental consent) who is unbaptized or a baptized Christian of another faith. Also any adult Catholic who seeks the Sacraments of the Most Holy Eucharist, Confirmation, and/or Matrimony or any Catholic who desires a more comprehensive knowledge of their faith may join RCIA. (Younger children should be guided within our parish's children's religious education).
What is the actual process of RCIA?
The RCIA process is the spiritual ritual journey of the life of the Church as a member of the “Mystical Body of Christ”. It is centered on the celebration the Most Holy Eucharist and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (instituted by Jesus Christ on Holy Thursday (see 1 Cor. 11:23-26), the weekly practice of our faith. This prepares one for the full reception into the Catholic Church during the Easter season.
What if I am not ready to become Catholic?
Obviously any participant in the RCIA process can choose not to become Catholic at any time. It is not unusual for individuals to continue their discernment and study of the Catholic Faith for an additional year or more. The Church greatly respects the time each person needs for conversion and decision. Whether one ultimately becomes Catholic or not is in God's hands. One basic goal of life is to develop a deeper relationship with Our Lord Jesus Christ and His Bride, the Catholic Church. This is what St. John means in his Gospel: to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth - St. John 4:23.
Does anyone help me during the process?
The RCIA team and our priests and deacons of St. Peter Church are always willing to help. In addition, during the process inquirers will select a sponsor or godparent who is a practicing Catholic and will serve as a spiritual friend and guide. If the individual does not know anyone who is Catholic, the RCIA team will find a suitable sponsor for them.
What information is required to become Catholic?
Baptized Christians of another faith will need a copy of their baptismal certificate. Copies of marriage certificates and/or decrees of annulment in the Church may be required as necessary. “Come to Me all you who labor or are burdened and I will give you rest – Jesus Christ! - St. Matthew 11:28.
