What is the Knights of Columbus?
The Knights of Columbus are a fraternal organization founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in March of 1882. The founding principles are: Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism which still hold true to this day.
Formed to provide financial aid to members and their families, mutual aid and assistance is offered to sick, disabled and needy members. Social and intellectual fellowship is also promoted among members and families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.
The order’s history shows how the foresight of Father McGivney brought about what has become the world’s foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through many services including: life insurance, annuity, and other care programs. Some of the main services supported by the Knights are: volunteer services, support for vocations, scholarships, military councils, church support, and more.
The Knights of Columbus has grown from a handful of members in one council to more than 14,000 councils and 1.8 million members throughout the United States and the world.
